Dentures – Tooth Replacement in Midtown Manhattan
Dentures can help patients who are missing some or all of their teeth regain their quality of life. If you’ve lost multiple teeth due to decay or injury, dentures will allow you to chew more easily and speak more clearly. Dentures can also prevent bone loss, support nearby teeth, and maintain the shape of your jaw. Cosmetically, wearing dentures will improve the appearance of your smile, minimize facial sagging, and provide the fullness to the lips and cheeks that creates a healthy, youthful appearance.
At his Midtown Manhattan dental practice, Dr. Matthew Nadler provides both partial and full dentures to eligible patients. He also offers permanent tooth restoration options, including bridges and dental implants. No matter which option you prefer, Dr. Nadler will make sure your treatment experience is thorough, comfortable, and personalized to meet your needs.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are removable teeth, which are custom-fitted and designed. They should be removed so that they can be cleaned properly and so that you can maintain a healthy clean mouth.
Partial dentures attach to nearby teeth with flexible acrylic or metal clamps, while full dentures attach to the gums via suction and close adaptation to the anatomy. Alternatively, complete dentures can be stabilized in the mouth with dental implants providing a much more comfortable and stable chewing experience. (This type of denture is known as an “implant-retained overdenture.”) Each set of dentures Dr. Nadler creates are carefully customized to ensure a snug, comfortable fit.

How are Dentures Made?
Fabricating a cosmetic and stable denture requires great attention to detail and multiple visits. Initially a 3D scanned impression will be taken to fabricate the custom impression tray necessary to take a final impression. The final impressions that we take record your unique movement and speech patterns. We design tooth position and shape to provide harmony with your face and ensure that your cosmetic outcome is amazing. After tooth position is determined, the denture is then fine-tuned and adjusted by Dr. Nadler to provide you with comfort and cosmetic enhancement.
When tooth replacement involves the removal of several teeth, getting your permanent dentures will take longer. Extensive extraction results in more swelling, and we must allow the gums time to heal before fitting you for dentures that will last for years. To allow the gums time to heal, patients wear a set of temporary dentures for about six months. This may require a reline with soft material to ensure that the dentures fit well while your mouth continues to heal and change shape. After complete healing,, we can fit you for dentures most accurately.
Weighing the Advantages and Disadvantages of Dentures
Though dentures are an excellent solution for some patients, they’re not right for everyone. Some people find dentures difficult to get used to because they don’t like the way they feel, while others manage to adjust over time.
Dentures also require more home care than natural teeth or dental implants: they must be cleaned carefully every day, soaked overnight, and regularly inspected for cracks and changes in fit. They don’t last as long as natural teeth, bridges, or dental implants, so expect that you may need to replace your dentures every five to ten years. Finally, while dentures prevent some bone loss, many patients still experience a reduction in jaw bone volume over time.
Dental implants provide many of the same advantages associated with dentures, but they function more like natural teeth. Patients who choose dental implants generally don’t experience bone loss or gum soreness. The fit of dental implants won’t change over time, either. People who don’t like the way dentures look or feel therefore typically prefer implants. These individuals report that it’s easier to chew and speak after having implants placed increasing their level of comfort and confidence.

Dentures are usually considered ideal for patients who are not candidates for dental implants. If you have a health condition that compromises your immune system or you’ve experienced bone degradation, you may not be a good candidate for dental implants. Temporary dentures, on the other hand, can be worn by virtually anyone. These devices don’t require the placement of posts in the mouth, so they’re considered noninvasive.
When you visit Dr. Nadler for an appointment, he’ll help you review all of your options and choose the best restoration to meet your needs. If you do choose dentures, he’ll make sure they fit precisely. The better your dentures fit, the easier it will be to adapt to them.
