Teeth Whitening
in Midtown Manhattan
How confident are you in your smile? If you’re like most people, you’ve probably wished your teeth could be brighter and whiter. Over the years, drinks like tea, coffee, cola, and red wine tarnish your teeth, as will failing to take care of your teeth with regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups.
Although you can find over-the-counter teeth whitening at your local drugstore, these products can be harmful to your teeth and gums. Professional teeth whitening is a straightforward, safe, and effective procedure that can remove years of stains and discoloration from your teeth to give you the healthy smile you’ve always wanted.
The Teeth Whitening Process
There are several options for teeth whitening solutions, and the best choice for you will depend on your needs and goals. The most common type of tooth whitening relies on a hydrogen peroxide gel that is applied directly to your teeth. In-office whitening using KOR whitening products allows for the use of a more potent bleaching gel.
At Nadler Dentistry, we take the necessary precautions to protect your gums from our very powerful bleaching agent before applying the gel to your teeth. Some whitening agents are laser-light-activated, which allows the whitening to happen faster. If your teeth have an advanced degree of discoloration, Dr. Nadler may suggest you continue the bleaching process at home for a few days or weeks and make any necessary modifications to ensure you get a great result.
For in-home whitening, Dr. Nadler will take impressions of your upper and lower teeth and will use them to make custom trays to fit you perfectly. A close fit helps the whitening gel get the most coverage over your teeth.
Our trays, made from 3D digital scans and 3D printed models, are designed to not only keep the gels within the trays, but to stop saliva from diluting the gels, a consequence that can reduce the extent of whitening.
We believe in the KOR whitening system for several reasons. To find out our recommendations for your best whitening results, please ask one of our professionals at your next visit or schedule a consultation.

Good Candidates for Professional Teeth Whitening
Those with healthy gums and teeth with no fillings or restorations tend to be the best candidates for professional teeth whitening. Patients whose teeth have yellow stains are more likely to respond to treatment, as opposed to grayish discoloration. Depending on how severe your staining is and how white you want your teeth, you may require more than one session to attain your desired results.
We do not recommend professional teeth whitening for the following people:
- women who are pregnant or nursing
- people who have had previous dental work like bridges, crowns, caps, and implants
- anyone with periodontal disease, receding gums, or sensitive teeth
- people allergic to peroxide and other bleaching agents
- children under 16 years old
If you aren’t a good candidate for teeth whitening for one or more of these reasons, ask about alternative cosmetic dental procedures, such as veneers and bonding. After evaluating your teeth and discussing your aesthetic goals, Dr. Nadler can recommend the best solution for your needs.
Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening
So you can better understand the teeth whitening process, we’ve compiled some of the most common questions and answers below.
The number of in-office whitening treatments you need will depend on the method used, how severe your stains are, and how much whiter you want your teeth. Different types of stains respond better to different treatments.
Though the results of whitening can be long-lasting, the stains will return if you use tobacco products or consume a lot of foods and drinks that leave a mark on your teeth. If you avoid these staining sources and practice good dental hygiene, you can maintain your results for longer before needing a touch-up treatment.
After in-office whitening, Dr. Nadler may want to see you a few days later to check on your gums. If you are whitening your teeth at home under a dentist-supervised process, Dr. Nadler may ask you to make a follow-up appointment to assess your progress after about two weeks of applications and again a few weeks later.
Tips for maintaining your newly whitened teeth include:
- Avoid stain-causing beverages like tea, coffee, or soda. If you do like these drinks, use a straw to minimize contact between the drink and your front teeth.
- Brush or rinse with water immediately after consuming foods or drinks that stain your teeth.
- Always observe healthy oral hygiene. Brush your teeth two times per day and floss every day to remove plaque and food particles between your teeth.
- Consider touch-up treatments. Depending on the whitening method Dr. Nadler recommends, you may need to schedule maintenance whitening after a year or so. If you smoke or drink lots of beverages that stain teeth, you may need a touch-up more often.
- If your teeth whitening strategy involves the fabrication of custom trays, you can perform these touch-ups at home at very little cost.
The two most common side effects are a temporary increase in tooth sensitivity and mild gum irritation. Both of these conditions are usually short-term. If you do experience sensitivity, you can reduce or eliminate it by:
- wearing the trays for a shorter period (for those doing at-home treatments using mouth trays). Try four 30-minute sessions instead of two 60-minute sessions.
- using a high fluoride-containing product, which can help remineralize your teeth. Nadler Dentistry carries this product.
- brushing your teeth with a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. These toothpastes contain an ingredient called potassium nitrate, which helps soothe your teeth’s nerve endings.
Because teeth whitening is an elective cosmetic procedure, you should be prepared to pay for it out of pocket, instead of relying on your dental insurance.
