Cosmetic Bonding

at Nadler Dentistry

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry research reveals that our smile is often the first thing people notice. Their respondents also remarked that the smile is the most memorable feature someone can have.[i]

If you’re embarrassed to smile because you have chipped, cracked, decaying, or discolored teeth, it may not only be severely affecting your self-esteem, but also changing how other people see you. Cosmetic bonding can quickly improve your smile and your confidence.

Subtle changes in one aspect of your appearance have an almost magical way of improving one’s entire presence. Many remark that losing weight takes years off a person’s face and body. Using Botox® and fillers to rejuvenate the face lends a new sense of vitality and youth.

Similarly, refreshing worn, cracked and stained teeth with dazzling ones, translates into an overall makeover. The new teeth spark new energy in the patient, brightening their faces and even their movement. In this way, the cosmetic dentists at Nadler Dentistry become the plastic surgeons of your smile. We use our expertise, experience and world-class technology to turn your vision for your teeth into reality.

What Is Bonding?

Bonding is a process in which tooth-colored composite resins are applied to your teeth to change the shape of teeth, close gaps between teeth, or fix chipped, fractured, or decayed teeth. This procedure is known as bonding because the plastic resin bonds to the teeth. Unlike veneers, which require a customized mold to achieve a proper fit, you can have bonding done in a single in-office visit.

What Bonding Is Used For

Bonding is among the most straightforward cosmetic dental procedures you can have done, and it requires little preparation on your part. Anesthesia is often not necessary unless you are getting bonding to address a decaying tooth.

First, one of our experts will use a shade guide to select the composite resin color that will be the closest match for the natural color of your teeth. Natural teeth are made up of different layers and colors, which may require multiple composite shades blending together to look real and disappear in the mouth. We may even go so far as to try our different colors on your teeth to evaluate our esthetic result prior to creating our definitive bonded restoration. Next, the dentist will slightly abrade the surface of the tooth to be treated to roughen it, apply light coating of conditioning liquid which helps the putty-like bonding material adhere to your tooth.

During a bonding procedure, Dr. Nadler can shape the composite resin until it matches your surrounding teeth for a natural look. Then, an ultraviolet light or laser hardens the material. After the bonding material cures, Dr. Nadler will further sculpt and trim it as necessary, then polish it until it matches the shine of the rest of your teeth.

You can usually expect your bonding procedure to take about 30 minutes to an hour in our comfortable midtown Manhattan clinic. If you wish to get more than one tooth bonded, Dr. Nadler may recommend spreading the work out over several visits or schedule a longer visit.

Pros and Cons of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding has several key advantages to be aware of, but there are some downsides as well. We’ll break these down so you can be a more informed patient.

Advantages

  • Cost: Bonding is a relatively affordable cosmetic procedure.
  • Time: Unlike crowns and veneers, which require significant time to prepare and a follow-up visit to place, our experts can complete your bonding in a single visit.
  • Minimally invasive: Bonding does not require any preparation before or after your treatment. It also does not involve discomfort during the procedure or downtime afterward, allowing you to resume your daily routine quickly. It also conserves the overall tooth structure so that much of the tooth remains available for any subsequent procedures.
  • Often takes place without anesthetic.

Disadvantages

  • Staining: Although you can dramatically improve your smile with bonding, the resin does stain over time. Crowns and veneers, on the other hand, tend to be much more stain-resistant.
  • Durability: The plastic resin used in cosmetic bonding is not as strong as your natural teeth. A bonded tooth may chip if you eat ice, chew on pens or pencils, bite your fingernails, or bite down on hard food or candy. Because crowns and veneers are more resistant to breaking, they often outlast bonding.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Cosmetic Bonding

Those who are self-conscious about their smiles find dental bonding is an excellent option for restoring their teeth. However, there are some limitations as far as what the composite resin material can achieve, so consult with Nadler Dentistry about whether it is a good fit for you.

Dental bonding uses a special material that Dr. Nadler will apply directly to the surface of your teeth and then harden using a special light. Porcelain veneers are hand made using ultra-thin pieces of porcelain that Dr. Nadler places over your existing teeth to cover up damage and restore your appearance.

One essential factor contributing to the success of dental bonding is the restoration’s location on the tooth. If the bonding is on the very edge of the tooth, it most likely won’t last as long because of biting forces and what types of food you are biting into. Chewy, hard, and crunchy foods will weaken the bonding more rapidly than soft foods. Many patients with front tooth bonding avoid directly biting into food that can compromise their dental work. A tooth-colored bonding can last up to a decade or even longer with proper care, depending on the tooth location and your eating habits.

No, teeth bonding is very subtle and natural-looking, as our experts take care to choose colors and translucence of bonding materials that match the exact shade of your teeth.

Dental bonding is an excellent choice for fixing teeth that have chips, cracks, or decay. It can also improve tooth appearance when there are noticeable gaps between them, or when they are misshapen, too long, or too short.

Teeth that have been bonded do not need unique at-home care. You should brush and floss just like you would for your untreated teeth, and get regular cleanings from a dental hygienist. However, dental bonding can and will stain over time. The possibility of stains will be much higher (and will happen at an accelerated rate) for those who don’t follow good oral hygiene, as well as anyone who consumes coffee, tea, dark cola, red wine, or tobacco products. If teeth are chipped and worn there is a high likelihood that you may be griding or clenching.  If this is the case, then we may recommend a night guard after the cosmetic bonding is completed.

No, cosmetic bonding is completely comfortable. You may feel the work taking place inside your mouth, but it will not result in any pain. If the deterioration of the teeth is below the gumline or deep into the tooth, the area may be more sensitive. In these cases, we can use anesthetic.

For most patients, dental bonding requires only one visit. Our dentists will mold the composite during treatment, so there is no need for wait time or follow-up visits.
